4 Guidelines to Spot a Religious Cult

By Harold Sala

  • Phony religous leaders capitalize on peoples desire to seek God and generaly those leaders build a financial empire in the process. This is in contrast to the self sacrificing Christians who really are God's men and women.

  • Phony religous leaders quote the Bible and use the language, but their quotations are always out of context.(Jesus on the level of famous men)

  • Phony religous leaders demand complete, and absolute submission spiritually, emotionally and physically. It is this unswerving loyalty which resulted in the Jonestown Guyana tragedy a few years ago(also the People's Baptist of Tracy City 50 years ago-see below) and allows some to amass tremendous followings of people totaly comitted to the revelation of the leader.

  • Phony religous leaders deemphasize the importance of the individual.
Your personality and uniquness as an individual must be made subserviant to the commune or the family of folowers. This means you don't question, you don't think for yourself, you aren't capable of reasoning---you must blindly follow---for to question the leader is to go against God Himself.

A very important thing to remember is that the true church of the Lord Jesus Christ has never completely apostatized, has never died!
Every cult has started on the premise of that notion. Most are presently proclaiming themselves as another evangelical denomination.

    • "The hard driving, browbeating, brainwashing pastor who majors on how abrasive, arrogant and antongonistic he can be will one day wake up to face empty pews in a silent auditorium!" Raymond W. Barber

Is this why we have empty pews?

When a Pastor ministers in an area, after some time he learns things about the people, the comunity, the culture,etc... I am also fortunate to have many close family ties to this comunity.
Several years ago my Grandmother mentioned a preacher-missionary who "ministered" in the Tracy City area that took up a collection for a mission trip to South America, he took some people with him. Here's the story.

A couple of Bible students from a church in Chatanooga came to Tracy City and started what they called a chapel. They had a tremendous work with souls saved, a church was started-yet it remained a chapel. It became known as The Peoples Baptist Church of Tracy City. Averaging 140 in attendance.
This was not an Independant Baptist Church!

In time these students left and another man came to fill the pastorate.

I have been told by personal accounts of some of the "off the wall" doctrines he preached. For instance, here's one: baby's were not allowed milk on Sunday.(due to labor involved milking cow). As can be expected attendance started to drop off.

With around 40 left, he then went on a campaign to collect money and valuables for a "mission" trip. Most of the members that could sold their property and went with him. Honestly they were not coerced, they went out of the sincerity of their hearts. They bought a plane and flew to South America. It was a sad situation there. Food became scarce, one couple lost a child (I know these people personaly). Some good friends back home paid their plane fair to bring them back.

When they left, the good people of Tracy City boarded up and nailed the doors shut to that church house.

That is not the end of the story . The "preacher boys" from out of town. came back to Tracy City a few years later. They came with unrealistic expectations to build a "super church" modeled after their "heroes". After trying to bribe people to Sunday school, reality set in. (They would count the prisoners in the local jails as regular attendants). They took many children to a church camp, many children were rebaptised every year they went.
Adding this number to the "baptismal count" and to the church roll. Being unable to drag people from the existing churches. They left, giving Tracy City and Grundy County now a bad reputation.

Being a part of an organized denomination does not guarantee you anything!
